Instructions for winter swimmers
Winter swimming instructions – Poukama atmosphere in the Porvoo archipelago
Winter swimming is an invigorating and calming experience that rewards both mind and body. At Poukama’s winter swimming and sauna events, we want every moment to be a warm experience – even when the water is cold.
Always bring a friend
Winter swimming is at its best and safest when shared with someone else. So always bring a friend with you when you go ice swimming – not only for safety reasons, but also for fun and companionship.
Your friend can help you if you slip or need support getting out of the water, but above all, they make the moment more relaxed and enjoyable. Laughing together, encouraging each other, and sharing a sauna make the experience even warmer.
Remember
Winter swimming is a shared experience. When someone else is looking out for you and you’re looking out for them, every dip feels better.
Before swimming
Take your time getting ready.
Dress warmly before and after swimming. Wool socks, a hat, and a warm jacket are your best friends. A bathrobe makes the moment especially comfortable and makes it easier to move from the sauna to the ice hole and back.
Equipment
Swimsuit
Headwear (hat or similar)
Winter swimming boots or non-slip footwear
Neoprene socks and gloves for extra comfort
Bathrobe and warm towel
Safe start
Familiarize yourself with the swimming area before entering the water.
All walkways and stairs in the cove are kept in good condition, but slippery surfaces can still be a surprise – walk calmly and hold on to the railing if necessary.
Entering the water
Enter the water slowly. Let your body get used to the cold, breathe calmly, and focus on how you feel. Winter swimming is not a performance but an experience.
Do not dive or submerge your head, but enjoy the water for as long as it feels good.
After swimming
Get out of the water calmly and dry yourself immediately. Wrap yourself in a bathrobe or warm clothes. Then go to the sauna or a warm room and enjoy the peace and quiet.
Warm up and enjoy
Let your body warm up gradually. Going to the sauna is part of the experience, but avoid overly hot steam before and after swimming. Enjoy yourself calmly, breathe deeply, and drink a warm beverage such as tea or water.
Remember
Winter swimming is suitable for almost everyone when done safely and according to your own feelings. Start slowly and listen to your body. At Poukama, you can enjoy winter swimming safely, surrounded by beautiful archipelago scenery and good company.
Come and experience the gentle power of winter swimming at the Poukama saunas in the Porvoo archipelago.
